Disneyland Maps from 1995, 2000, 2001, and 2005.
The maps published from 1995 through 2005 harken back to the detail and
feel of the original Disneyland maps drawn by Sam McKim beginning in 1958.
The Disneyland Hotel has returned to the map, not surprisingly at the
point that the Disney Company acquired ownership of the hotel and began
its expansion of the Disneyland Resort from a single day event to an
entire vacation venue. This included turning the parking lot south of
Disneyland park into a new theme park, Disney's California Adventure, and
creating one of the largest parking structures in the world on what had
been strawberry fields and a trailer parker west of the original Disneyland
park.
The beautiful feel and detail of these maps can be attributed to
Nina Rae Vaughn, the artist responsible for creating this current series.
Where is the copyright date?
Some discussion of copyright dates is due here. Under the 1909 copyright
act, an owner would lose his or her rights to copyright if the published item
did not include a formal copyright notice, with date and owner. Later, the
1976 copyright act permitted the accidental release of a published work
without copyright, if the owner corrected the error. The requirement for
copyright notice was dropped entirely when the United States joined the
Berne Convention in 1989. Copyright notice as a
formality was dropped entirely and placing the notice on a work is voluntary.
This explains why there is no copyright notice on the Disneyland maps published
after 1988. This effects the 1989 map, the last of the 1978 series (Brown
Borders), and all of the most recent series begun in 1995. The process of
identifying maps, particularly where the differences may be quite small or when
the date of publication may not be clear is made more complex.
1995e
There are two maps from 1995, which are almost identical. As opposed to
the maps from 1958 and 1964 where the differences are due to changes in the
park, the difference between the two 1995 maps are due to errors, which
were in the first map released. The uncorroborated story is that the first
version, the one listed here, was released prematurely before the artist and
editors had an opportunity to review its details. Once the errors were
discovered, the maps were quickly withdrawn from the park and replaced
with the corrected version; however, the original was printed on high
gloss paper, while the corrected version was printed on a lower quality
paper. For all the hoopla over the map with the errors, it seems that there are
a fair number of them available for sale and the price has never been that
high.
Points of Interest
Since this map and the corrected version below are identical, except for
the errors on this map, only the errors will be covered here.
- In the upper left hand corner Walt Disney's opening day speech is
attributed to
July 15, 1955.
Unfortunately, this is two days before
Disneyland actually opened on July 17, 1955.
- At the bottom of the map, below Monorail Blue, the designation is
"Mark VI"
and although we love our Monorail, the actual
designation should be "Mark V".
- This last error is the hardest to find, but the most fun. Under the
Tomorrowland banner, directly below the "D" there is a
stray bucket
from the Skyway attraction, which consisted of buckets carried
on a cable between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. There had been an accident
involving the Skyway and California safety law made removing the attraction
preferable to the cost of maintaining it. However, one of the buckets
stayed behind, at least in this map.
How to Identify This Map
- The first thing to look for is the large banner in the lower right hand
corner proclaiming "Disneyland: 40 Years of Adventure." Both this map and
the corrected version will have this banner.
- This map is printed on high gloss paper, whereas its corrected version
is on a standard no-gloss poster paper.
- Lastly, the three errors identified above will be present on this map
and absent on its corrected version.
1995
This is the corrected version of the previous map. It is curioius that the
first map was printed on high gloss paper, whereas this one is not. Perhaps
the cost of having to dispose of the defective maps resulted in using a lower
cost paper.
This map introduces several new attractions, and is, in my opinion, a
better quality illustration of the park, returning to the detail of Sam
McKim's original maps from 1958.
Points of Interest
- In Adventureland, one of the great E-ticket attractions, Indiana Jones
Adventure is present.
- Mickey's Toontown, the first new land to be added to Disneyland since
Bear Country, opens. This includes a number of new attractions, including
Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, based on the 1988 film
"Who Framed Roger
Rabbit".
- On Main Street the indiivdual store names are back.
- Big Thunder Ranch adds a petting zoo, which doesn't last very
long. Shades of Holidayland.
How to Identify this Map
- The first thing to look for is the large banner in the lower right hand
corner proclaiming "Disneyland: 40 Years of Adventure." Both this map and
the version with errors will have this banner.
- This map is printed on standard no-gloss poster paper.
- In the upper right hand corner Walt Disney's opening day speech is
attributed to July 17, 1955.
- At the bottom of the map, below Monorail Blue, the designation is
"Mark V".
2000
In the 2000 map the antiquated, but well-loved People Mover is replaced
with the Rocket Rods. This was a part of a large overhaul of Tomorrowland
in 1998. Keeping Tomorrowland "tomorrow" has been an on-going
problem at Disneyland, which is why at Disneyland Paris Tomorrowland was
replaced with Discoverland, or "a future that never was" opting
instead for a Buck Rogers or Victorian Jules Verne vision of a future that
never happened.
Points of Interest
- The slow moving People Mover is replaced with the fast Rocket Rods.
The Circle-Vision Theater is removed to accommodate the queue for Rocket
Rods.
- The slow loading Astro Jets are rechristened the Astro Orbiton
and moved to the entrance of Tomorrowland.
- Michael Jackson's "Captain Eo" is replaced with "Honey,
I Shrunk the Audience" from Walt Disney World.
- The Trip to Mars is turned into Redd Rocket's Pizza Port restaurant, but
a smaller version of the rocket that stood many years ago in the location
is back.
- Cosmic Waves, another short lived attraction, is found next to Redd
Rocket's.
- The long empty Carousel of Progress building is turned into Innoventions,
a showcase for business, where you can ride a
Segway.
- The Fantasyland and Tomorrowland Autopia attractions are merged into a
single, longer attraction.
How to Identify this Map
This map is uniquely identified by the banner in the lower right hand
corner that announces "Disneyland 45 Years of Magic".
2001
This map was released after the closure of the Rocket Rods.
Points of Interest
- The most interesting thing about the 2001 map is that although the
Rocket Rod
attraction was long gone at this point, it still appears unlabeled on the
map. The map artist is having the same problem that Disneyland itself is
having, what to do with the former People Mover and Rocket Rod track?
- The Big Thunder Ranch as a restaurant is closed and made into a location
for private gatherings.
How to Identify this Map
Since we are bereft of copyright dates, there are two indicators for the
2001 map as compared to the 2000 and 1995 maps.
- The banner in the lower left hand corner states simply
"Disneyland".
- The ribbon around the outside of the map is curly, as compared to the
straight borders of the 1995 and 2000 maps.
2005
As of this writing, this is the most recent map for sale at Disneyland
in celebration of their fiftieth anniversary.
Points of Interest
- This map was released as a part of Disneyland's fiftieth anniversary
celebration.
How to Identify this Map
- This map is similar to the others in this series, but is
differentiated by the straight blue border.
- In the lower left-hand corner is the emblem of the fiftieth
anniversary, a golden Sleeping Beauty's Castle.
