Disneyland Maps from 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984,
1987, and 1989
Again, as with the previous series of maps, a major change in the park
prompted the release of a redesigned map, this time with a brown border
and characters once again found in the border. The Disneyland Hotel is
still absent and the monorail mysteriously disappears in the parking lot and
Harbor Blvd.
1978
As the first in the series, this map lays out the form for the next
eleven years. The level of detail matches that of the previous series,
being less than the original 1958 series.
Points of Interest
- Space Mountain finally opened on May 4, 1977 and lost all of the turrets and
loops of the artist's conception.
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is advertised in the medallion in the
lower left corner.
- This map shows a green, wooded area between Main Street and Space
Mountain with people strolling through it. Nothing could be further
from the truth. This is a backstage withour, devoid of trees and
certainly off limits to Disneyland guests.
How to Identify This Map
- The copyright on this map is found just to the right of the
medallion advertising Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and just above the
brown border. The date is 1978.
1979
Following in the practice of releasing a map whenever there is something
new to advertise, this map is very similar to the 1978 map.
Points of Interest
- Similar to the 1978 map, the detailed description of the Main Street
stores has disappeared.
- The advertising medallion advertises the opening of Big Thunder
Mountain by simply removing the words: "Coming Soon!"

The only major change from the previous map is the medallion
advertising the remodeled Fantasyland, to be opend the summer of 1983.

1983
This map shows the remodeled Fantasyland. During the original
construction of Disneyland the facades of Fantasyland were brightly
painted flat surfaces attempting to give the feel of a renaissance fair.
Additionally, King Arthur's Carousel and the Mad Tea Party created a traffic jam
just inside Fantasyland. The remodel created a more European feel with
thatched roofs and stonework, overall a much better feel.
Points of Interest
- King Arthur's Carousel has been moved back away from the entrance
to Fantasyland through Sleeping Beauty's Castle.
- The Map Tea Party (Tea Cups) has been moved closer to Alice in
Wonderland.
- Skullrock and the pirate ship have been removed.
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant has been moved back into the area where
Skullrock was formerly.

Premier".
- The restaurant next to Pinocchio's Daring Journey changes names to
"Village Haus".

"Captian EO" staring Michael Jackson.

1989
This map introduces a change in the name of Bear Country and a new
attraction in that area.
Points of Interest
- Bear Country is renamed Critter Country to accommodate something other
than the Country Bear Playhouse.
- Splash Mountain, which would eventually be replicated in four of the
five Magic Kingdom type parks, opens. This is based on the 1946 Disney
classic "Song of the
South". Disney has never released this film on video tape or
DVD, however, there is a rumor that it will be released in 2006.
How to Identify this Map
- This is the first Disneyland map without a copyright date. For more
information on this see the 1995 series
of maps.
- This map's date is identified by a small date found underneath the
brown border in the lower left corner, just under Jiminy Cricket. The
date is "6/89".
