1966
The first of the blue, purple and white series, this map introduces the new
Tomorrowland, with Space Mountain and the People Mover, eliminating the Flying
Saucers, a well-loved, but problematic attraction due to its maintenance
difficulties. This is the point that the Rocket to the Moon was removed.
Eventually, as the moon became "accessible" through NASA's Apollo
program, this attraction was replaced with a virtual trip to Mars, now
repeated in Mission: Space at Disney World's EPCOT.
Points of Interest
- Space Mountain, as conceived here, almost implies that the ride vehicles
will exit and enter the building. Although this was never actually in the
plan, the drawing here has more external loops and towers than what was
actually implemented.
- Another interesting point is that although Space Mountain was conceived of
for Disneyland, it was first built at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney
World in Florida.
- New Orleans Square, a new land in Disneyland, including the eternally
popular Pirates of the Caribbean attraction appears on this map.
This is perhaps one case where the artist's original conception was exceeded
by the reality of the attraction. New Orleans Square appears first in the 1962
map as a future attraction in the form of a simple square surrounded by
buildings. Eventually it would be implemented as three short streets, almost
alleys, and a small park tying it to the Haunted Mansion.
- Using
the ride mechanism developed for It's a Small World at the New York World's
Fair and transplanted to Disneyland, guests are loaded onto boats and
transported past the first table service restaurant in Disneyland, The Blue
Bayou Restaurant, hurdled down two water falls and ultimately hoisted up a
last water fall.
How to Identify This Map
- This map is uniquely identified by the copyright year of 1966 found in the
lower left-hand corner in the copyright notice underneath the Disneyland
Hotel.
1968
There were several changes introducted in 1968 as Disneyland continues
its expansion and updating of Tomorrowland.
Points of Interest
- In Tomorrowland, Monsanto's Hall of Chemistry
and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are replaced by Adventure Thru
Innerspace, a classic ride, which, although closed for many years, still has a
loyal following. Check out
http://www.themightymicroscope.com/ for a virtual tour of this
attraction.
- The Art of Animation in Tomorrowland disappears, only to reappear in a
new form first at the Disney/MGM Studios at Walt Disney World and at
Disney's California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort in later years.
How to Identify this Map
- This map is uniquely identified by the copyright year of 1968 found in the
lower left-hand corner in the copyright notice underneath the Disneyland
Hotel.
1972
For many years to come, the Disneyland Hotel disappears from the
Disneyland maps. At this point the hotel was owned by Wrather Corporation, not
affiliated with the Walt Disney Company. The spot formerly occupied by
the hotel is now dedicated to advertising coming attractions at Disneyland.
Points of Interest
- The map presents Disneyland's newest attraction Bear Country in the
lower left-hand corner. This occupies the area formerly housing the Indian
Village, never a big draw.
- The tunnels between New Orleans Square and the former Indian Village
have been replaced with an open walkway.
- Bear Country is the first expansion beyond the park encircling
Disneyland Rail Road.
- At long last, the Haunted Mansion, which sat idly by the Rivers of
American for years, is also finally open. This attraction was originally
planned as a walkthrough, but after Disney completed the attractions for
the New York World's Fair, they developed the Omnimover system, used here
and in the Monsato Adventures Thru Innerspace.
- Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln loses its sponsorship by Lincoln Savings
and Loan.
How to Identify this Map
- This map is uniquely identified by the copyright years of both 1968 and
1972 found in the
lower left-hand corner in the copyright notice underneath the Disneyland
Hotel.
1974
The 1974 map presents America Sings, a tour-de-force of audioanimatronic
singing and dancing, housed in the former Carousel of Progress building.
With the departure of the Carousel of Progress goes one of the blockbuster
attractions Disney developed for the New York World's Fair.
Points of Interest
America Sings is the subject of the medalion in the lower left hand
corner of the map. The maps have become a vehicle for advertising new
attractions. The attraction itself is found in Tomorrowland.
How to Identify this Map
- This map is uniquely identified by the copyright years of 1968,
1972, and 1974 found in the
lower left-hand corner in the copyright notice underneath the Disneyland
Hotel.
1975
Although there are few changes from the 1974 map, this map was released
primarily to participate in the coming bicentennial celebration of the United
States.
Points of Interest
- Mickey Mouse, Goofey, and Donald Duck celebrate America on Parade,
Disney's tribute to the United States' bicentennial celebration coming
in 1976.
- Strangely, America the Beautiful, which was represented as a single
attraction in 1974 is given dual billing on the 1975 map. Perhaps the
guest waiting area and the 360 degree map were considered two
attractions. This reminds of the 1958b map in which the moving
sidewalk to the monorail was given its billing as an attraction.
How to Identify this Map
- This map is uniquely identified by the copyright years of 1968,
1972, 1974, and 1975 found in the
lower left-hand corner in the copyright notice underneath the Disneyland
Hotel.
1976
With new maps released in 1974, 1975, and 1976, the differences between
them are minimal.
Points of Interest
At long last, Disneyland's Space Mountain is going to open, as
advertised in the medallion in the lower left corner.
