Disneyland Maps from 1966, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1975, and 1976.

Tomorrowland has always been a problem at Disneyland. Trying to keep up with the "future" has always been difficult, with what looked like tomorrow quickly looking like yesterday's left-overs. In 1966 Disneyland updated Tomorrowland to what was recently called a white concrete Republican view of the future. This necessitated the release of a new map, in fact a new series altogether.

The maps published from 1966 through 1975 differ from the original series most obviously in that they have a blue, purple, and white border, with outlined characters interspersed between the border and the map. Although every bit as colorful as the 1958 series by Sam McKim, these maps seem to have less detail than the earlier version.

The first of the blue, purple and white series, this map introduces the new Tomorrowland, with Space Mountain and the People Mover, eliminating the Flying Saucers, a well-loved, but problematic attraction due to its maintenance difficulties. This is the point that the Rocket to the Moon was removed. Eventually, as the moon became "accessible" through NASA's Apollo program, this attraction was replaced with a virtual trip to Mars, now repeated in Mission: Space at Disney World's EPCOT.

Points of Interest

  • Space Mountain, as conceived here, almost implies that the ride vehicles will exit and enter the building. Although this was never actually in the plan, the drawing here has more external loops and towers than what was actually implemented.
  • Another interesting point is that although Space Mountain was conceived of for Disneyland, it was first built at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World in Florida.
  • New Orleans Square, a new land in Disneyland, including the eternally popular Pirates of the Caribbean attraction appears on this map. This is perhaps one case where the artist's original conception was exceeded by the reality of the attraction. New Orleans Square appears first in the 1962 map as a future attraction in the form of a simple square surrounded by buildings. Eventually it would be implemented as three short streets, almost alleys, and a small park tying it to the Haunted Mansion.
  • Using the ride mechanism developed for It's a Small World at the New York World's Fair and transplanted to Disneyland, guests are loaded onto boats and transported past the first table service restaurant in Disneyland, The Blue Bayou Restaurant, hurdled down two water falls and ultimately hoisted up a last water fall.
